The French Conquer Palenque
1857–1893 · Parts I and II
About this volume
Volume VII follows the strong French presence in the later nineteenth-century rediscovery of Palenque and the decisive transition from interpretive drawing to photographic documentation.
The first part surveys travellers, publications and institutions from Morelet and Lottin to Brasseur de Bourbourg, Viollet-le-Duc, Maler and others. The second is devoted to Désiré Charnay: his expeditions, articles, books, translations and photographs, which brought the monuments of Mexico and Central America to a broad international audience.
