The Anglo-American Race to Palenque
1839–1840
About this volume
Volume VI reconstructs the remarkable race between the British Walker–Caddy expedition and the journey of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood. Their competing routes reveal both the political geography of Central America and the severe practical demands of reaching Palenque.
Caddy’s diary, official reports, Stephens’s narrative and Catherwood’s carefully observed drawings are compared in detail. Later travellers—including Arthur Morelet—extend the account and show how first-hand description, art and diplomacy together reshaped knowledge of the site.
