The “Fantastic” Mr. Waldeck
1831–1837 · Parts I and II
About this volume
Presented in two parts, Volume V is a detailed study of Jean-Frédéric Maximilien de Waldeck—artist, traveller, collector and one of the most controversial figures in the history of Maya exploration.
Part I reconstructs his long and often elusive biography, his journey to Palenque, his diaries, correspondence, paintings and published works. Part II follows the literature about Waldeck from the nineteenth century to the present, testing legend against documentary evidence and examining the enduring influence of his imaginative visual record.
