An Ancient Sleep Comes to an End
1567–1832
About this volume
Volume II reconstructs the long process by which Palenque returned to written history. Beginning with sixteenth-century missionaries, it follows local knowledge, colonial administrators and the first official Spanish expeditions into the forest.
Reports by Calderón, Bernasconi, del Río, Armendáriz and Dupaix—and the drawings that accompanied them—are placed in chronological context. The volume also traces the first European publications and translations that transformed a remote ruin into an international subject of inquiry.
